Hawks Helping Hartford Service Day at Hebrew HealthCare
April 6, 2016, West Hartford, CT—On Friday April 1, several volunteers from the University of Hartford participated in the Hawks Helping Hartford Service Day by volunteering at Hebrew HealthCare. The volunteers assisted with Hebrew HealthCare’s spring beautification project by painting flowerpots and planting gorgeous spring flowers in them. The flower pots were designed and inspired by a variety of quotes that were provided by Hebrew HealthCare’s Life Enrichment Department. Once the flower pots were complete, they were distributed throughout the building to bring spring through the halls.
With the conclusion of the spring project, a small resident social took place, which included volunteers, staff members, and several of Hebrew HealthCare’s residents. These individuals took part in playing games, singing songs, and taking the opportunity to interact and connect with one another. This time spent together and the connections that were made positively affect not only Hebrew HealthCare’s residents, but also the participating volunteers.
Ruthan Wein, Youth Volunteer Coordinator at Hebrew HealthCare spoke to the group about what volunteering means, setting the stage for a memorable afternoon that the participants will not soon forget. This service day not only provided the volunteers with an opportunity to contribute but it also provided them with great insight into the lives of the residents at Hebrew HealthCare. Throughout their day spent at Hebrew HealthCare, the University of Hartford volunteers were able to see that nursing homes offer more than just needed healthcare services; in fact many individuals benefit from the social and spiritual activities that are available. This positivity also reinstates the importance of Hebrew HealthCare’s volunteer programs and that volunteering is more than just about helping but it can be an eye opening and life changing experience.
